Moon

Side by side
And satisfied
In each other’s arms,
Our murmuring
Like smoke rings rising
Up into the stars:
Would that those nights return
When you slept by me
Beneath Venus and Saturn
Breathing love into eternity
But you’re more distant than the stars
That wink at me and laugh.

My God your God we’ve come so far
But moons were never meant to last.
