On reading Ginsberg

If you’ve come looking for the poet,
The poet of sublime thoughts,
Of weighty lines, loftiness,
Of a mortal agony screamed divine

— Then you’re bough-wow-barking mad
Up the wrong tree.
Seek the tree of life
And a higher aspiration.

If you want something worth finding
Be ready to tear your own heart
In a fit of hopeless longing
Or raise your hands in blind faith.

If you want something worth finding
Than you better trust
That something in the darkness will hear you
And that the walls of Jericho will fall.

If you’ve come looking for the poet
The poet of sublime thoughts,
Of burning passion, exile,
Of a mortal agony made divine

— If you’ve come looking for that poet
You better start rummaging
Through the broken pottery
Stranded by an ancient river.
