The Well of Shadows

I’m not strong enough to sip from the well
Whose waters seem so sweet
For I feel a thirst it could never quell
With all her waters sweet.
I was not born to drink this cup
Of water rich and sweet
And I must be gone while the sun is up
And leave these waters sweet;
Let me drink a draught of poison before
I sip of waters sweet
Although I have been wearied, weak and poor
My lips can know no sweet
Before my promised cup is passed to me
Or I fear to never leave or be free.
