Necessity

Silk, gold, pillows, jewels, statues,

Chairs, couches, tables, embassies, chess, feasts,

Meat, sugar, feathers, paintings, crystal, shoes,

Oil, frankincense, filigree, silver, priests,

Geese, champagne, frois-gras, elevators, dice,

Guitars, mattresses, opera, cacti,

Fish, apples, butter, dogs, telephones, ice,

Carpets, automobiles, swords, ginger, rye,

Orchestras, newspapers, coffee,

Air-conditioning, bread, pudding, novels,

Politics, banks, lemons, gambling, toffee,

Rhubarb, fountains, passports, type-writers, bells;

I can leave and never feel poverty

And any mortal thing except for thee.
