Mortality

O if I were to stand
Alone in life and wandering
By my sad heart’s command,
Would I die pondering
The time spent squandering
And wasting my young heart away?
If death were upon me
Whose name would rest upon my lips
Before my soul was free,
Ready for Azrael’s ships
To rest like an ecplise,
Passing from day to night to day?
Love is such denial —
I think it now, I thought it then;
Life is one vast trial
For all the race of men —
But one not lived again;
Is it so strange? I cannot say.
