Beckoning

Read! and feel the intensity of youth
And behold budding dreams grow faint and die.
Read! and enter the labyrinth of truth
And with the devil laugh and angels cry.
Read! look through these eyes, see a world too seen,
Eyes made ancient, lost to antiquity.
Read! and through my songs witness what has been
And what always is; piety and pity.
Read! I am no conjurer of words
And offer now my softly quivering hand.
Read! gently read and think it not absurd;
Gently, kindly, for you must understand!
Read! O read! I pray with a heart contrite!
Read, listen, learn, take to heart and — recite!
