I

How cruel and unnatural it is to hear
The very voice that once did softly soothe
Can bring the heart into such pain and fear

How cruel a parting of hearts and worse
That it be ruined by lacking beauty
Oh that is by far the darker curse

And not one kiss? Not one soft word even?
Simply cast in coarse Saxon “Go!” – no more?
Not the smallest hope to believe in?

Why! Why! I ask the heavens with such need
But there is nothing but the heavy clouds
Is this what all my love has earned from Thee?

O is my love not just a torturous spell
But now a sinful deed worthy of this Hell?
